Min H. Kao Building Health Safety Plan Implementation Status

Revised 8/16/2020

Please review the Provost's Health Safety Plan is available at https://provost.utk.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2020/07/252156246-Health-Safety-Plan-for-Labs-FINAL.pdf.

The Provost's plan builds on prior training for the Return to Campus and the Return to Classrooms that established protocols such as:

  • Social distancing, wearing face masks, regular washing of hands
  • Classrooms rearranged to enable social distancing
  • Students using university-provided cleaning materials to sanitize their work areas in a classroom (For laboratories, cleaning will be done twice—as students arrive and also as they prepare to leave.)
  • Protocols for cleaning classroom technology by instructors
  • Minimizing instructional interactions where persons are within six feet with a total not to exceed 10 minutes per class session
  • Health safety plan for students included in course syllabus

The classrooms in this section and managed by the Registrar. Upgrades to facilities and technology are funded by the campus.

Facilities Services COVID-19 Classroom Plans are available at https://fs.utk.edu/covid-19-classroom-plans/. The Facilities Plans are limited to rooms scheduled by the registrar for classes and labs.

Facilities Services has removed furniture and posted signs.

The Office of Innovative Technologies (OIT) is in the process of installing cameras and upgraded facilities to support Zoom conferencing. As of today, technology installations and upgrades and still in program due to supply chain delays. It is highly recommended that you test all of the technology that you plan to use before your first class. IT Support is provided by OIT. If you have a problem with the technology, contact OIT at 974-9110. The phone number and room number are available at the podium. OIT will fix the problem over the phone or dispatch a service technician.

The remainder of the rooms below are managed by EECS. For Fall 2020, a number of changes have been made to rooms to follow campus COVID-19 guidelines.

  • Tables, desks, and chairs have been removed to reduce occupancy.
  • Signage will be posted before classes begin.
  • PPE supplies such as disinfectant spray, dry wipes, hand sanitizer, etc. have been distributed based on supply. Supplies items continue to be constrained.
  • Rooms where students are known to congregate have been locked and will remain closed.

If you do come to the Min Kao Building, please note:

  • Walk-in, in-person access to EECS Business Office and EECS IT Staff personnel will be limited. Schedules will be published.
  • Conference rooms must be scheduled in advance through the EECS Business Office.
    This will:
    • Increase safety for all room users.
    • Allow sufficient time for room users to clean rooms between meetings.
    • Facilitate contact tracing as necessary.
    • Allow time for key access to be arranged.
  • Engineering and Computer instructional labs will be closed to walk-in users. Instructors/TAs will be required to be open/close and manage all lab sessions.
  • Senior Design students will not be provided 24×7 access to the Min Kao building and the two Senior Design labs. All access must be authorized and managed by the instructor.
  • Instructors will be required to write a Health Safety Plan for all rooms and labs used for their courses. If a course lecture or lab is conducted in a research laboratory, the Research Health Safety Plan will need to be updated for the instructional activity.
  • Chairs must not be moved from room to room to increase occupancy. Contact the EECS Business Office if capacity is a problem.
  • Due to the reduced presence of faculty and staff, it is important to bring your VolCard and keys necessary to access the building and rooms. Finding someone to open a door for you may be difficult. As a last resort you may need to call the UT Police Department at 865-974-3114 Non-Emergency number to have them let you in.
  • Routinely asking another person to loan a key or unlock a door is an unnecessary risk. If you need access to a room, contact the EECS Business Office to request a key or VolCard access.

See room-specific guidance below.

Conference rooms are used for small classes and meetings. Upgrades to facilities and technology are funded by the department.

  • All conference rooms use must be approved and scheduled through the EECS Business Office.
  • The rooms are not open to the public and must remain locked when not in use.
  • The organizer is responsible for keeping attendance records (retained for at least two weeks) and making sure occupants follow campus health safety standards.
  • Instructors using a conference room for a course are responsible for making sure occupants follow the Health Safety Plan.
  • Organizers must allow time at the end of their scheduled time to clean the room in preparation for the next meeting.
  • Anyone with a faculty/staff office key, sub-master, or XAA1E key can unlock a conference room. Anyone else requiring access must request access through the EECS Business Office.
  • Keys should not be borrowed or loaned to access a conference room.
  • Unscheduled use of rooms will not be permitted. If asked, Business Office and IT personnel will refer the person to their course instructor, TA, or supervisor.
  • Chairs must not be moved between rooms. If room occupancy is insufficient, contact the EECS Business Office for assistance.
  • Food and beverages will not be permitted.
